What Happens To Our Skin While We Sleep?

A good night’s sleep is very important when it comes to your skin’s health. Many things happen to your skin while you sleep. Pay attention to these things and use your understanding to achieve the healthy, glowing skin you want!

Skin Cells Regenerate

Skin cells go into makeover mode while you sleep. Skin cell growth and repair happens in the evening. This is when cell mitosis, cell division that renews and repairs skin, is at its peak, whether you are asleep or not. During the evening is when cells need nutrients the most, and when their anti-aging benefits have maximum impact.

Skin is More Receptive to Certain Products

To get maximum impact from your anti-aging products and their ingredients, you should take advantage of your skin during its renewal mode overnight. This can mean using sleeping facial masks and overnight beauty products. It’s suggested to use the ‘heavy hitters’ at night, like retinols and glycolic acid. Using retinols at night is alot better than using them during the day because sunlight can break down their active ingredients and even make you more sensitive to sun damage.

Skin loses Moisture

Your skin’s oil, sebum, excretion peaks at midday, and then decreases in production at night. When you don’t have a protective layer of natural oils on your skin overnight you lose water. This loss of water is called transepidermal water loss, and it happens towards the end of the day too. It is crucial to replenish this water loss with overnight moisturizers.

Skin Temperature Changes

During the night when you are sleeping your skin becomes slightly hotter and more acidic. These factors cause your skin to become slightly drier. So be sure to lather on a heavier cream at night.

Skin Gets a Break From Stress

There is a big correlation between sleep and beauty. The amount of sleep you get impacts your levels of cortisol, stress hormones, and if you don’t get enough sleep it shows on your face. By not sleeping you increase your cortisol levels and your skin is put in a pro-inflammatory state, making your skin look sullen and puffy.
